The cabbage diet idea was that the person could eat as much of the soup as they wanted, but nearly everything else (except of course water) was forbidden or severely restricted and for this soup, bread is not an allowed companion.
This recipe probably contributed to the ill reputation Finnish food has. The dieting persons usually lost quickly some kilos, which they typically gained again after some weeks. So, if you really want to get the Finnish diet experience, here is the recipe, but don't blame me if it does not work you have been warned.
Ingredients
1 small to mid size white cabbage
5 large onions
5 medium carrots
1 bunch of celery
2 Paprika
2 Cans of chopped tomatoes (a 400 g)
2 cubes of vegetable bouillon
5 Piment
1 bunch of parsley
White pepper and Tabasco according to taste
Instructions:
Wash and prepare the vegetables. Cut the vegetables and the cabbage into small pieces. Put the vegetables in a big pot and cover them with water.
